A radical Danish artist Wilhelm Freddie, who would have turned 100 this year, is one of the most radical Danish artists of the 20th century. He experienced how the police closed his exhibitions and impounded his works, and he even had to go to prison because of his art. But Freddie could do more than create headings in the newspapers. His uncompromising work with surrealism and his experiments with various artistic media gave him a central position in Danish art history. Read Freddie's biography
The exhibition Wilhelm Freddie – Stick the Fork in Your Eye! is the title of the exhibition, for exactly like a fork in our eye, Freddie wanted to awaken us from the slumber he believed bourgeoislife had brought upon us. By confronting us with unconscious dreams and instincts he activates our repressed powers. Hence, Freddie’s works are not supposed to be understood in a common-sense way, but to be used as a stepping-stone to our own fantasies.
More than 150 works of art The exhibition shows more than 150 of Freddie’s works, including not only paintings and sculptures, but also film, ballet, happenings, window displays, dress design and more. The works are displayed in 13 smaller thematic groups which cut across the chronology.
