The invalid woman, photography, The Daguerrian Society


The practice of taking pictures of dead or ill-in-bed people is no longer commonplace. Here we have a handsome woman that apparently was not well enough to have her portrait taken in the photographer's studio. She gazes into the camera at a time when many diseases took life prematurely. She did not realize that we would be looking at her long after her passing, and after the passing of her photographer, as well.
